Which Alcohol Has the Least Calories?

Which Alcohol Has the Least Calories?
The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that a can beer has 153 calories. A 5 oz. serving of red wine has 125 calories. Distilled beverages like gin and rum have roughly 97 calories per 1.5 oz. serving.

Mixed Drinks

While distilled beverages have the fewest calories, adding juice or soda will increase your calorie intake. According to Ask the Dietician, 6 oz. of cola has 68 calories. Lemon-lime cola has 74 calories. Cranberry cocktail juice has 51 calories.

Considerations

When choosing an alcoholic beverage based on calorie content, your best bet is to drink a 12 oz. bottle of light beer with 103 calories or a distilled beverage on the rocks at 97 calories.

Conclusion

Alcohol is low in saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium, according to the USDA. Most of the calories in these beverages come from alcohol. While it makes sense to choose a beverage with less alcohol per volume such as beer -- because a serving of beer is 10 to 12 oz. -- you take in more calories than a beverage with a higher percentage of alcohol per volume such as rum and vodka.
